Maxwell Fairman

Maxwell Fairman is a 21-year-old violinist and composer based in Boston. A devoted chamber musician, Fairman made his White House debut in 2016 at age twelve as a member of the string quartet The Perfect Fourth, performing for Michelle Obama. The quartet also performed alongside the duo Black Violin in 2017. Fairman appeared at Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall with the Peraza Music Workshop Ensemble as well.

Fairman is a 2026 Sphinx Competition Senior Division semifinalist. He also appeared as a soloist with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra in 2024 and 2025, under the direction of Christopher Wilkins. Fairman studies with Donald Weilerstein at the New England Conservatory on a full-tuition merit scholarship funded by the Starling Foundation. He has served as concertmaster of the conductorless NEC Chamber Orchestra directed by Donald Palma, the NEC Philharmonia under Stefan Asbury, the NEC Symphony under Hugh Wolff, and the Chautauqua Music Festival Orchestra under Timothy Muffitt.

As a composer, Fairman has received commissions from the NEC Chamber Orchestra and Castle of Our Skins. He has also had music performed by the Boston Landmarks Orchestra. He looks forward to having a piece performed by the Boston Latin Academy string orchestra in May.

Early career highlights include soloing with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Cincinnati Symphony Youth Orchestra at their side-by-side concert, first prize at the 2019 NAACP ACT-SO National Competition, and a performance on NPR’s From the Top. He began violin studies at age four and previously studied with Almita Vamos, Davis King, and Marion Peraza. In his free time, Fairman enjoys joking around with friends, playing video games, and exploring Boston.
